Bedroom Lighting Ideas: A Warm, Calm Glow Without Rewiring Anything

Most bedrooms have one light source: a ceiling fixture that is exactly as bright at eleven at night as it is at seven in the morning. It is fine for finding socks and terrible for the last hour before sleep. The fix is not a rewire or a dimmer switch. It is two or three small, warm, low lights at the height you actually live at in the evening, which is somewhere between the bed and your eye line.

Here are five arrangements, from the simplest to the most complete, using lamps that plug into a wall socket or a USB port.

1. One warm light on the nightstand

If you do nothing else, put one soft light by the bed and stop using the ceiling light after dinner. The Moon Table Lamp does this well: an aluminum moon about 26 cm tall running at 5 W or below, which is a glow rather than a beam. It stands on a nightstand without crowding it. If you are sensitive to LED flicker, choose the no-flicker version from the Style option.

2. A colour you can change from the bed

If you read in bed and then want the room to go dim without getting up, you want a lamp with a remote. The Full Moon Table Lamp is an 8 W moon that ships with one: warm white at 2700 to 3300 K for reading, then any of the RGBW colours for the last half hour. It runs from a 100 to 240 V adapter, so it works anywhere, with a plug option for your country. It is also a good choice for a child's room for the same reason: nothing to reach for.

3. Light the corner, not the ceiling

The single biggest change in how a bedroom feels at night is moving the light from above you to beside you. A Moon Floor Lamp in the corner, a 40 cm moon on a stand with a warm light, fills a room of about 10 to 15 square metres with a low, even glow that a nightstand lamp cannot. It takes a standard E27 bulb, so you choose the warmth and brightness yourself and replace the bulb when it goes. Check the plug option and voltage for your country before ordering.

4. Add scent to the light

Light and scent are the two things the brain uses to decide it is evening. The Moon Aroma Lamp is a small USB moon with a spot for a few drops of essential oil: press the button and you get both. It is about 25 cm tall, comes in black or white, and is the least expensive lamp here, which makes it the easy add-on to any of the arrangements above.

5. One thing on the shelf that is not a lamp

A bedroom that is only lamps can feel like a hotel. One object with light in it, that is there to be looked at, changes that. The Levitating Star Globe Lamp is a clear constellation globe that floats above a magnetic base, spins when you push it and cycles through blue, purple, green, red and warm white. It runs on USB and belongs on a dresser or a shelf at eye level, not by the bed.

Putting it together

The full arrangement is a floor lamp in the corner (3), a moon lamp or full moon lamp on the nightstand (1 or 2), and either the aroma lamp on a shelf (4) or the globe on the dresser (5). But start with one. Almost everyone who puts a single warm light by the bed stops using the ceiling light within a week, and the rest follows. All five lamps are in the Moon Lamps collection.
